But here’s the truth most of us learn the hard way: The middle is where life is actually happening. And refusing to be seen there comes at a cost. The messy middle is that in-between space where:
There are questions without answers. Feelings without clarity. Movement without certainty. And that’s exactly why it feels unsafe. The middle doesn’t offer proof. It doesn’t offer credentials. It doesn’t offer guarantees. Just honesty. Most people say they’re afraid of being judged. But that’s not the full story. What we’re often afraid of is: So being seen without that armor can feel terrifying. Even when we crave connection. And so we lie to ourselves. We tell ourselves: “Once I have clarity, I’ll share.” “Once I’m confident, I’ll speak up.” “Once I’m on the other side, I’ll let people in.” But confidence doesn’t precede visibility. Visibility builds confidence. Not performative visibility. Not over-sharing. Not explaining yourself to everyone. Just honest presence. From a nervous system perspective, being seen is regulating when it’s done safely and in small doses. When you allow yourself to be seen:
Your system learns something new: “I can be real and still be safe.” That’s powerful. That’s how self-trust is built. Not through perfection, but through surviving honesty.
Being seen can be as small as:
Seen doesn’t mean exposed. It means unhidden. Let's try an experiment! I call this one: The “Safe Visibility” Experiment This week, choose one small way to be seen, on your terms. Rules:
Examples:
Your only job is to notice:
That’s it. No outcome goals. No performance review. Just data. Most people expect:
What usually happens instead:
And even if no one responds the way you hoped? You still gain something crucial: Integrity with yourself. If you’re in the messy middle and it feels lonely, remember.... You don’t need to rush to the other side. You don’t need to clean this up. You’re allowed to exist as you are: unfinished, evolving, and human. So we’ll keep experimenting. Because happiness isn’t found in pretending we have it all together. It’s found in letting ourselves be seen while we’re still be coming. Let’s stop waiting for happiness. 🩷
