Disconnecting for Happiness: Why Stepping Away from Screens Can Make You Happier (Yes, Even Though You’re Reading This Online)

9/19/2024

I get it. Here I am, writing to you through a screen, and yet I’m telling you to disconnect from technology for a little while every day. It might sound ironic, maybe even hypocritical, but stick with me. There's more to it than just unplugging for the sake of it. Disconnecting can be a powerful way to reconnect with yourself and, ultimately, with happiness.

The Problem with Constant Connection
We live in a hyper-connected world where we’re always a click or tap away from the latest news, our friends’ updates, or the constant ping of work emails. The truth is, all this constant connection can be overwhelming. It stretches us thin, divides our attention, and leaves us feeling exhausted.

While technology keeps us informed and entertained, it also floods our brains with information overload. And when you’re always plugged in, you lose touch with the real moments that bring happiness—those quiet, simple interactions with yourself or with others.

Why Disconnecting Can Bring You Closer to Happiness
Disconnecting doesn’t mean becoming a hermit or throwing away your devices. It just means taking a deliberate step back. Taking even 10-15 minutes to disconnect from your phone, computer, and social media can make a world of difference in how you feel.
  1. Rest Your Mind: Studies show that taking breaks from screens helps reduce mental fatigue and stress. Your brain needs time to rest and recharge. By disconnecting, you give your mind the space it needs to unwind, think clearly, and process emotions.
  2. Be Present: When you step away from the constant stream of notifications, you create space to be present in the moment. Whether it's savoring a meal, enjoying nature, or having a conversation with a loved one, these small moments of mindfulness can bring joy and contentment.
  3. Boost Creativity and Focus: Disconnecting allows your brain to wander and daydream, which actually boosts creativity. Studies show that some of our best ideas come when we allow our minds to relax and disengage from structured thinking.
  4. Reconnect with What Matters: It’s easy to get sucked into comparing our lives to others online. Disconnecting helps break that cycle and allows you to focus on your own happiness—what really matters to you, not what others project.

My Experience with Disconnecting
For me, I’ve found that disconnecting—even briefly—gives me the clarity I need to focus on what’s truly important. Whether it’s stepping away from my phone in the morning to take a walk or closing my laptop after a long day, it’s in those moments of intentional disconnect that I find a sense of peace.

That sense of disconnection doesn’t mean isolating myself. Quite the opposite. When I disconnect from the digital world, I’m more present with the people around me. I’m more focused on the task at hand, and I can listen to my own thoughts rather than being bombarded by everyone else’s.

How to Make Disconnecting a Daily Practice
You don’t have to disconnect for hours on end to see the benefits. Small, simple steps can go a long way.
  • Set Boundaries: Create specific times when you’ll disconnect from technology each day. Maybe it’s the first 30 minutes after you wake up, or the hour before bed.
  • Designate Device-Free Zones: Keep your phone out of certain spaces like the dining room or bedroom. Use these spaces to focus on mindful activities, whether that’s reading, meditating, or spending quality time with loved ones.
  • Replace Digital Time with Real-Time Activities: Instead of scrolling through your feed, try something more grounding. Take a walk, call a friend, or try a hobby you’ve neglected.
  • Schedule Reflection Time: Use part of your disconnect time to reflect on your day. Think about what went well, what you’re grateful for, or even what you’re struggling with. These moments of self-reflection can increase your overall sense of happiness.

The Irony—and the Truth

Yes, you’re reading this online. And yes, I’m encouraging you to disconnect, even though it’s the digital world that brought us together in this moment. But that’s the beauty of balance. Technology can be an incredible tool to connect, inspire, and inform us, but only if we use it mindfully.

At the end of the day, happiness is about making choices that align with your values. If you want more peace, more mindfulness, and more presence in your life, disconnecting for a few minutes a day could be the key to unlocking that joy.

So, after you finish reading this, maybe put the phone down for a bit. Take a walk, sit quietly, or spend time with someone you love. Because sometimes the best way to connect with happiness is to disconnect from everything else.
