I’ll Be Happy When… (And Other Lies We Tell Ourselves)

7/30/2025

We’ve all said it.
“I’ll be happy when things slow down.”
“I’ll be happy when I lose the weight.”
“When the house is clean, when I have more money, when I finally get a break…”

At first, it sounds like motivation. Like something to look forward to. But if we’re being honest—it’s just another way of putting happiness on hold.

The Dangerous Illusion of “Someday”

We’re taught to believe that happiness is the prize at the end of the productivity tunnel. That if we just work hard enough, earn enough, prove ourselves enough,
then we get to feel good.

But here’s the truth:

Happiness that’s always waiting for “someday” is never truly yours.
Because the finish line keeps moving.
I know this because I lived it.
I built the life I thought I was supposed to want—the title, the house, the paycheck. And from the outside, everything looked great. But inside? I was drained. Disconnected. Constantly chasing the next thing that I was sure would finally make it all feel worth it.

Spoiler alert: It didn’t.

And the more I postponed my happiness, the further away it got.

The Shift: From Delaying to Deciding
Eventually, I realized I wasn’t unhappy because I was ungrateful—I was unhappy because I was
disconnected. I was living by default, not by design. Going through the motions, waiting for the right time to enjoy my life.
But the right time never magically arrives.

The permission to be happy doesn’t get handed to you—you have to give it to yourself.

That’s why I started doing these small mindset experiments. Not to fix everything overnight, but to reconnect with what actually feels good. Not what looks good. Not what earns approval. But what makes me feel like me.

This Week’s Experiment: The Someday Audit
If you’re always waiting for the next thing to finally let yourself breathe or smile or rest—I see you. I
was you.

So here’s a simple challenge to try this week:
Do a Someday Audit.

Every time you catch yourself saying or thinking:
  • “I’ll be happy when…”
  • “I’ll finally relax after…”
  • “Once I get through this, then I’ll feel better…”

Write it down.

Then ask yourself: What feeling am I postponing? And how can I give myself even 5% of that now?

Joy isn’t an all-or-nothing thing.
You don’t have to abandon your goals to enjoy your life.
You just have to stop putting happiness on layaway.
