Reclaiming Your Time From Digital Overwhelm

1/25/2026

Have you ever opened your phone to check one little thing…  and suddenly it’s 40 minutes later, you’re five strangers deep on Instagram, and you can’t remember why you picked up your phone in the first place?

Yeah. Me too.

Our devices were supposed to make life easier.

Instead, they feel like overeager toddlers pulling on our sleeves every 8 seconds...
Look at this!
Respond to that!
Don’t forget this!

And women, especially high-achieving women, get hit hard.  Because our digital lives aren’t just fun distractions.  They’re calendars, school notifications, 17 Slack channels, group chats, grocery lists, emails from the dentist telling us we’re overdue, and “urgent” messages from work with no actual urgency.

It’s a lot.  And it’s quietly draining the joy out of our days.
So let’s talk about how to take our time and our peace back.

Digital overwhelm isn’t about the amount of information coming at us…
It’s about the constant pull of attention.
Every notification forces your brain into decision mode:  Do I check this now? Ignore it? What if it’s important?
And even that tiny mental gear shift burns energy when you do that 200+ times a day (yes, that’s the average).
All this end up leaving you exhausted without even knowing why.  It’s why you feel frazzled even after a day of “not doing much.”

We talk about time management like it’s a calendar problem.  It’s not.  It’s an attention problem.  And your attention is sacred real estate that you're phone is hijacking.

And it feels so hard to put your phone down because the apps are literally designed to keep you hooked.
Not because you’re weak.  Not because your self-discipline sucks.  But because brilliant engineers spend their days figuring out how to get you to look at your screen just one... more… time.

It’s not a character flaw.  It’s architecture.  And knowing that is actually empowering because it helps you stop blaming yourself and start changing your environment.
This hit me one day when I realized:  I was completely exhausted but I hadn’t done a single thing I chose that day.  I’d only reacted to what my phone asked for.  I responded to emails and chat messages.  I'd reviewed notifications and did whatever they asked, but I had not completed a single thing that I wanted to get done.

It felt like I was living life in the passenger seat of my own brain, so it was time for an experiment.

So I asked myself:
What would my day feel like if I reclaimed even just a little time from my phone?
Spoiler:
It felt damn good.
Not perfect.
Not monk-level enlightenment.
But damn good.

And that's how the The Digital Declutter Experiment was born....

Your Mission: Reclaim 60 minutes of attention per day for one week.

Here’s how:
✅ Step 1 — Pick Your “Reclaim Window”
Choose any 60-minute block each day where you’ll:
  • Put your phone in another room
  • Silence notifications
  • Avoid email, social, and messaging
Pro tip: mornings are magic.  Afternoons are setting yourself up to fail.

✅ Step 2 — Protect It Like a Meeting
This is a standing appointment with the boss and yes, you’re the boss.
No negotiating.  No “just quickly checking.”

✅ Step 3 — Fill the Time With Something That Feeds You
Choose anything that feels nourishing, grounding, or just pleasantly quiet:
Journaling
Reading
Walking
Making real breakfast
Working on a dream project
Doing absolutely nothing
The point:  You choose.

✅ Step 4 — Observe
Each day, ask:
  • How did I feel before?
  • How did I feel after?
  • What did I notice about myself?
Write it down — you’ll be surprised by the patterns.

What You Might DiscoverA few things I’ve seen (in myself and others):
✨ Your brain settles
✨ You suddenly have creative ideas
✨ You remember your priorities
✨ You’re calmer with your people
✨ You notice you don’t actually care about 80% of your notifications

And maybe most curious of all…
When you stop feeding your attention to random digital demands,
your inner voice, the one you’ve been missing, gets louder.

This Is Not About Anti-Technology...tech is amazing.
I love it. I need it.  I use it to run my business, keep my family organized, and remind myself to drink water like an adult.

This experiment isn’t about rejecting technology.  It’s about right-sizing its role in your life.  Your phone is a tool.  It’s not the boss.  It doesn’t get to run your day unless you let it.

You’re allowed to take your attention back.
You’re allowed to protect your peace.
You’re allowed to prioritize what actually matters to you.

Because reclaiming your time isn’t about rigid structure, it’s about finally feeling like your life belongs to you again.  And that?  That’s happiness.
