Staying Positive in a World That Feels Upside Down: Happiness Among the Self-Absorbed

8/8/2024

Let’s face it—there are times when it feels like the world has gone mad. You’ve probably been there: surrounded by people whose values seem completely foreign to you. The kind of people who prioritize money over kindness, deceit over honesty, and self-interest over basic human decency. It can feel disheartening, especially if you’re trying to stay grounded and positive.

But here’s the thing—happiness, true happiness, isn’t about controlling your environment. It’s about learning to rise above it. It’s about staying true to your values, even when you’re surrounded by people who seem to lack them entirely.
The Challenge of Staying PositiveBeing surrounded by negativity can take a toll on anyone. It’s exhausting to deal with people who only care about themselves, who manipulate others for personal gain, and who seem to have forgotten what it means to be decent. You start to wonder: “Is there something wrong with me? Am I too naive, too trusting?”

No, you’re not. But staying positive in a world that feels increasingly self-centered is a challenge, and it's normal to feel frustrated. The key to staying sane and happy is in how you choose to respond. You can’t change the way other people behave, but you can control how you react to them—and that’s where your power lies.
Embrace the Power of BoundariesOne of the most liberating things you can do for your happiness is set boundaries. There’s nothing wrong with distancing yourself from toxic people, even if they are coworkers, family members, or longtime friends. You don’t have to tolerate dishonesty, manipulation, or narcissism just because it's coming from someone you know. Protecting your mental and emotional space is crucial if you want to stay positive.

When you set boundaries, you send a clear message to the universe—and yourself—that your happiness and well-being are non-negotiable. You’re signaling that you won’t let negativity creep into your life unchecked. And by doing so, you’ll find that it becomes easier to stay positive because you’re no longer absorbing the toxic energy of others.

Focus on What You Can Control
There’s a famous Stoic teaching that says, “You cannot control what happens to you, but you can control how you respond.” This is a powerful mantra for navigating a world filled with people who don’t always act in good faith. If you focus on the things you can’t control—like how other people behave—you’ll only end up frustrated and bitter.

Instead, focus on your own actions, your own mindset. Ask yourself: “How can I be the kind of person I want to see in the world?” When you shift your focus inward, you take back your power. Suddenly, the craziness around you loses its grip. You realize that your happiness is in your hands, not theirs.

Kindness as a Form of Rebellion
In a world where deceit and selfishness sometimes reign, choosing kindness can feel like an act of rebellion. And honestly, it is. When you show empathy, offer help, or treat someone with respect, you’re making a statement. You’re saying, “I refuse to play by the rules of this dog-eat-dog world.”

Kindness is contagious. It might not always seem like it, especially when you’re surrounded by people who take advantage of others. But here’s the thing: the impact of kindness often goes unseen. You never know how a simple act of decency might inspire someone else to act differently. And even if you don’t change anyone else’s behavior, you’ll notice how much better you feel when you act in alignment with your own values.

Let Go of What Others Think
One of the reasons we struggle with happiness when surrounded by negative people is that we often care too much about what they think. You might feel tempted to win their approval, change their minds, or prove that you’re “better” than them. But here’s a truth that’s hard to swallow: not everyone is going to like you, and not everyone is going to understand your values.

And that’s okay.

Your happiness can’t be dependent on the validation of others—especially people who don’t share your values. The more you let go of needing approval from toxic people, the more freedom you’ll find. And with that freedom comes a deeper sense of peace and contentment.

Practice Gratitude (Yes, Even for the Crazy Ones)
This might sound counterintuitive, but practicing gratitude for the difficult people in your life can change the way you experience happiness. No, you’re not thanking them for being selfish or deceitful. But you can be grateful for what they teach you about who you don’t want to be.

Difficult people offer us opportunities to grow, to become more resilient, and to deepen our commitment to our own values. Every time you encounter someone who’s rude, manipulative, or obsessed with money, you’re given a chance to reaffirm what’s important to you.

That might sound like a small victory, but over time, these moments of clarity add up. They remind you that you’re on the right path, even if it’s the more difficult one.
Find Your TribeLastly, while it’s important to develop resilience in the face of negativity, it’s equally important to seek out people who uplift you. Find the ones who get it. The ones who share your values and who believe in kindness, decency, and honesty. These people are your tribe, and they’re out there, even if it feels like they’re few and far between.

Happiness thrives in connection. When you’re surrounded by people who genuinely care about others, it’s easier to stay positive, even when the world feels crazy. These relationships remind you that decency and goodness do still exist—and that you’re not alone in wanting to make the world a little better.

Staying positive in a world full of deceitful, self-centered people isn’t easy, but it’s possible. By focusing on what you can control, setting boundaries, practicing kindness, and letting go of the need for approval, you can protect your happiness. Surround yourself with like-minded people who share your values, and remember: your happiness is yours to cultivate. In the end, staying true to yourself is the greatest act of rebellion—and the surest path to lasting happiness
