The Quiet Power of Being Present

2/9/2026

I used to think “being present” was for people who had nothing better to do.
You know, the ones who sit on a cushion at sunrise, sipping herbal tea, surrounded by candles and immaculate houseplants. Meanwhile I was over here juggling kids, marriage, work deadlines, groceries, appointments, unread emails, the dog puking on the rug…

 Let’s stop waiting for happiness.
Present?  I was just trying to survive.

But here’s the twist I didn’t see coming:  The more chaotic life felt, the more my mind wandered and the less grounded, fulfilled, and alive I felt. I wasn’t actually living my life. I was narrating it, future-tripping through it, problem-solving it… anything but fully experiencing it.

It turns out, presence isn’t about silence or stillness.  It’s about noticing what’s true in front of you without being pulled into everything else.

This really hit me on night as I was standing in my kitchen stirring pasta.  I was mentally replaying three separate conversations I’d had that day, while also planning tomorrow and thinking about how far behind I felt.  All while my daughter was telling me a story and I wasn’t hearing a word of it.  I could feel myself nodding along, saying “mhmm” like a robot, while my brain ran laps elsewhere.
Then she laughed at something she’d said.  And I heard her laugh, really heard it, and it snapped me back.  I looked at her.  Like actually looked.  Her crinkled cheeks.
The way her hair was half-falling out of a messy bun.  How animated she was, waving her fork around like a conductor.

In that three-second shift, everything changed.  I was with her again.  Not in yesterday or tomorrow.  Here.

That moment was… ordinary.  And deeply sacred.

That's the power of presence.  It makes the ordinary sacred.

We live in a world that worships speed, efficiency, achievement, hustle.

Being present doesn’t “produce” anything the way the world defines productivity.

But here’s what presence does produce:
✅ Clarity — You respond instead of react.
✅ Connection — Conversations go deeper.
✅ Joy — You notice small, beautiful things.
✅ Sanity — Your nervous system chills out.
✅ Confidence — You trust your inner voice more.

Presence is a real-time tether to your life.

Without it, everything becomes a highlight reel you barely remember living.
It’s like running a marathon with no time to look up.  Crossing the finish line and thinking… Wait. Wasn’t there supposed to be more?

Presence is the “more.”

Let’s clear up a lie we’ve all swallowed:  Being present doesn’t require stillness.

You can be present while walking, cooking, emailing, laughing, driving, or folding laundry.  Presence is attention + openness.  That’s it.  It’s feeling your breath while brushing your teeth.  It’s hearing the tone in a friend’s voice.  It’s noticing how the sun hits your desk.  It’s realizing your throat is tight and unclenching it.  It’s noticing what’s true right now, without adding a story.

You are not going to live present 100% of the time.  No one does.  Our brains love time traveling.

Presence is simply the act of coming back.  Over and over.  With gentleness.  There’s no gold star.  There’s no final destination.  It’s a relationship.  The kind that deepens every time you return.

And because you know we’re not just here to talk about it, let's experiment:

For the next 48 hours, try this:

✅ Step 1 — Pick a Daily “Anchor Moment”
Choose ONE everyday activity:
  • Making morning coffee
  • Brushing your teeth
  • Starting your car
  • Walking into your home
  • Washing your face at night
This will be your presence cue.

✅ Step 2 — Be Fully There
For just 60–90 seconds, drop into the moment.
Notice:
  • What you see
  • What you hear
  • What you feel in your body
  • What you smell
No judgment.  No fixing.  Just noticing.

✅ Step 3 — Say This Quiet Phrase
“Right now, this is where I am.”
Let your body arrive.

✅ Step 4 — Reflect
At night, jot down:
  • When you remembered to be present
  • How it felt
  • What you noticed
No overthinking.  A few words is enough.

Here’s what usually surprises people:
✨ It only takes a moment to feel different
✨ Presence creates more time, not less
✨ Your nervous system responds immediately
✨ You notice joy everywhere
✨ Your relationships subtly deepen

Life doesn’t become louder.  It becomes clearer.  The world slows down without anything actually changing.  Because you changed.

Presence isn’t a luxury.  It’s a lifeline.  It reminds us that life isn’t something we’re planning for.  It’s something we’re living.  It helps us savor the good, handle the hard, and remember that we’re not just racing through time… we’re existing inside it.
