The Relief of Realizing That You Don’t Have to Become Someone New

4/12/2026

There’s a belief many women carry without realizing it.  It shows up in moments of frustration.  In that restless feeling of “something’s missing.”  In the urge to blow everything up and start over.

It sounds like this:  “I need a reset.”  “I need to reinvent myself.”  “I don’t recognize who I’ve become.”

And on the surface, it makes sense.  When you feel disconnected, reinvention sounds like hope.  But here’s the truth I keep coming back to, personally and professionally:
Most of the time, you don’t need a reinvention.  You need a reconnection.

Reinvention promises a clean slate.  A new identity.  A new routine.  A new version of you who finally has it together.  It’s appealing because it implies:
  • You can leave the messy parts behind
  • You can skip the in-between
  • You can outrun what feels uncomfortable

But reinvention also carries a subtle message:  “Who I am right now isn’t enough.”  And that message quietly deepens the disconnection you’re already feeling.

Most women who want to reinvent themselves aren’t lost.  They’re overextended.
They’ve been:
  • Responding instead of choosing
  • Meeting expectations instead of honoring needs
  • Functioning instead of feeling
  • Performing competence instead of listening inward

Over time, that creates distance.  Not from success.  Not from capability.  From self.  So of course life starts to feel flat.  Or heavy.  Or misaligned.  That’s not a character flaw.
That’s a signal.

So what's the difference between reinvention and reconnection?
Reinvention says:  “Become someone else.”  Reconnection says:  “Come back to yourself.”  Reinvention looks forward aggressively.  Reconnection looks inward gently.  One demands effort.  The other asks for attention.  And attention is often what’s been missing all along.

Reconnection feels subtle.  It doesn’t come with fireworks.  It shows up quietly:
  • When you notice what drains you
  • When you admit what you miss
  • When you tell the truth—even privately
  • When you stop overriding your own signals

These moments don’t look impressive.
But they’re powerful.  Because every time you listen instead of dismiss,  pause instead of push,  choose instead of react.  You rebuild trust with yourself.  And that trust changes everything.

When you’ve been disconnected for a long time, your nervous system adapts.
It prioritizes:
  • Efficiency over curiosity
  • Control over intuition
  • Stability over aliveness

Reconnection isn’t about shaking things up.
It’s about creating enough safety to feel again.  And that doesn’t require a new personality.  It requires presence.

If something feels missing, it doesn’t mean you need more.  It means you need contact.

Contact with:
  • What matters to you now (not five years ago)
  • What your body is asking for
  • What you’ve outgrown
  • What you’ve been tolerating

That’s not reinvention.  That’s reconnection.

Ok, it's time for our experiment.  I call this one:  The “Reconnection” Experiment.

Once per day this week, pause and ask yourself one of these questions:
  • What feels heavy right now?
  • What feels quietly good?
  • What do I need a little less of today?
  • What do I miss?
  • What am I ignoring because it’s inconvenient?

No fixing.  No planning.  No journaling required (unless you want to).  Just noticing and responding with one small adjustment.

Examples:
  • Taking a break instead of pushing
  • Saying no without explaining
  • Doing less of the thing that drains you
  • Adding one small moment of relief

That’s it.  Reconnection happens in micro-moments.

At first, reconnection can feel emotional.  Sometimes tender.  Sometimes sad.  Sometimes relieving.  That doesn’t mean it’s wrong.  It means you’re paying attention again.  And with attention comes clarity.  Not the dramatic kind, but the honest kind.  The kind that says: “Oh. This is what I’ve been missing.”

And remember:    You’re not behind.  You’re not broken.  You’re not failing at life.  You’re just ready to come home to yourself.

So we’ll keep experimenting.  Because happiness isn’t found by becoming someone else.  It’s found by reconnecting with who you’ve been all along.

If you’ve been reading this thinking,
“something just feels off in my life, but I can’t fully explain it…”
You’re not alone and you’re not broken.

Most high-achieving women aren’t unhappy because they’re doing life wrong…
They’re unhappy because they’re solving the wrong problem.
